Firemaking is one of the most useful skills in RuneScape. No, I am not kidding, it is very good for many things. Oh, well, actually it is not. It is used for making a campfire where you can cook your freshly caught fish or your uncooked stews. Level 33 firemaking is required for the Sea Slug quest. Firemaking's usefulness has been expanded by the Shades of Mort'ton quest, since higher firemaking levels allow cremating higher level shades, hopefully yielding better keys and Mort'ton dungeon chest loot.
For lighting a fire, you will need Logs. To obtain these, use your woodcutting skill described in the woodcutting guide, which can be found here.
To light Logs you need a tinderbox, which looks like this:
With your tinderbox, make sure you have a log which you have the firemaking level to burn. (Look at Section 3 of this guide to know the required levels). Now, all you need to do is to stand on a piece of clear land (Not standing on top of flowers, or any smaller objects which you can walk on), and use your tinderbox on your logs..
Basic Log Firemaking

The burn time of your fire is affected by the type of log you use. Higher valued logs burn for longer periods of time. An additional 15 seconds is added to the burn time for each higher grade of logs (example: Willow logs will burn 30 seconds longer than Regular logs). Below is a table with the recommended levels when you should stop and start burning specific logs.

Note:
This is probably the best, and fastest way to level firemaking. This will be a step by step instruction task.
When you start off at level 1 firemaking, cut down normal logs using the Woodcutting Skill, and burn these until level 20 firemaking. ii. Using your Woodcutting Skill now, cut down Oak Logs, and burn these until level 40 firemaking.
Note: When doing the third and final step, make sure you have at least 2.2 mil gp, and you must have alot of patience*
Go to a Free to Play world. With only 250k in hand, take your tinderbox, your 250k and yourself to Rimmington. Now, at the General Store on Rimmington, there is usually always alot of willow logs in there. Usually around 5-10k willows at a time. These willows sell for 12gp each from the general store. Buy 26 of these logs, and burn them, then buy another 26, and burn them. If you decide to buy willow logs from players, you could be looking at hefty prices of up to 7 mil to get you the amount of logs you will be paying 2.2 mil for.
Pyremaking
To cremate shade remains in Mort'ton, Sacred oil is required. This is obtained by using Olive oil on the temple's sacred fire when your Sanctity is 10% or more. For a better understanding, see the Shades of Mort'ton Quest Guide, and/or refer to the Mort'ton Shade Burning Special Report.

Shade remains are obtained by killing shades in Mort'ton and in the Mort'ton dungeon. A minimum of a Bronze key is required to enter Mort'ton dungeon (obtainable by killing a Loar shade in Mort'ton and cremating the remains per the instructions below). Deeper into the dungeon (access determined by key color), higher levels of shades are found. Cremating higher level shades (using higher level pyre logs) yields higher level keys, which get you further into the dungeon. The key hierarchy is Bronze, Steel, Black, and Silver. The keys also open color-coded chests, and the higher level keys/chests yield better loot, including a greater chance of obtaining Fine cloth (a rare item used to make Splitbark armour).
Place pyre logs (logs treated with Sacred oil) on one of the funeral pyre sites located around Mort'ton. Place shade remains on top of the logs. You will not be permitted to place the remains if the logs are not the appropriate level; note also that you cannot pick back up your logs (nor the shade remains)! Use a Tinderbox to light the pyre and the shade will be "released". Some loot will appear on the nearby stand: hopefully a Mort'ton dungeon key, or else possibly just some coins.
Lamps and Lanterns
Candles, Lamps and Lanterns are items which can be lit using the firemaking skill, which can give you access to places which are dark. The best example to show this is the Lumbridge Swamp Dungeon.
Making lamps and lanterns uses the Crafting skill and in some cases the Smithing skill. Refer to the Crafting Guide for manufacturing details.
Lamps and lanterns can blow out so you should carry a Tinderbox with you. No Firemaking experience is earned when lighting these.

The Candle Lantern takes a white candle, bought from the Lumbridge Swamp Candle seller or from Catherby's Candle-maker. It will also take the Black Candle left over from Merlin's Crystal Quest which you may have stowed away in your bank. However, the Candle lantern with a Black Candle will take up an extra space in your bank and will not stack with the White Candle version.
The Oil Lamp can be made and used on its own but is more convenient and stronger if put into an Iron frame, converting it to an Oil lantern (Smithing level 26 to make frame, Crafting level 26 to assemble.) Use some oil on an oil lamp, then light with a tinderbox
The Bullseye Lantern is made from a Steel frame and a glass Lantern lens (Smithing level 49 to make frame, Crafting level 49 to assemble.). Use Some Oil on a Bullseye Lantern, and light it using a tinderbox.
The Oil Lamp / Lantern and the Bullseye Lantern require oil. Use some oil on an oil lamp, then light with a tinderbox
Collect Swamp-tar from the Lumbridge swamps. Take 1 Swamp-tar for each lantern, together with the lantern(s) to the Chemist's house in Rimmington (just west of the General Store). In the eastern part of the main room there is a Small Oil Still.
Use the Swamp-tar with the still, then Use the lantern with the still and it will be filled with oil. The oil lantern is now ready to be lit and used. With a lit lantern, right-click and there is an option to Extinguish the lantern.
Mining helmets are dropped by Level 11 Cave Goblin Miners in the "Lost Tribe" dungeon underneath Lumbridge Castle. Use a Tinderbox on the Mining Helmet

Collect 1 swamp tar for each lantern you wish to add oil to. Take all the swamp tar, and all the lanterns you wish to add oil to to the chemist in Rimmington.
